I would like to do well in overseas conditions - says Dhoni

0
India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said he would personally like to atone for his poor performance in South Africa during the forthcoming New Zealand tour.
Dhoni was out of form in the Test series and came to bat at No.7 and managed only 87 runs in four innings. He also wants the bowlers to contribute with the bat as well.
"I would like to improve my performance. I would like to do well in overseas conditions. But sometimes the field is spread and I have to play shots. But I want the 8,9,10 to start contributing more," said Dhoni before leaving for New Zealand where India will play five ODIs and two Tests from January 19.
Dhoni, however, said he had full confidence in his young batsmen who did well in South Africa. Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane all did well during the two-Test series that South Africa won 1-0.
"I am confident about this team's ability. The batsmen played really well in South Africa," Dhoni said.
He said the team's performance in the Test series against South Africa will stand in good stead in New Zealand as well.
"We have a slightly bigger challenge. We should be proud of what we have and it's important for us to tune up a bit," he said.
Dhoni was also happy that all his bowlers will be fighting for a place in the playing eleven.
"There will be more competition in bowling department. Now with everyone fit, there will be a lot of competition. When wickets are on drier side and there is not enough swing movement, we have to improve as fast bowlers. Because we don't have hit-the-deck bowlers," he said.
Dhoni was also happy with the return of the express-fast Varun Aaron.
"We have different types of fast bowlers. Varun (Aaron) has come back well. But each bowler has to know their strengths. So we will have to see," he added.
Asked about spinners, Dhoni said: "We don't have five specialist bowlers. So we can't have spinners who give away too many. Jadeja's performance in South Africa was good. Spinner's role on first day is to not give it too much turn. When they play more outside India, they will learn the need to be patient. Till we get a seamer all-rounder, that's what they will have to get used to."
Dhoni said Karnataka all-rounder Stuart Binny could also be used as the third seamer in the ODIs.

"Stuart Binny is interesting. He has some swing. Most international venues wickets are flat, we will have to see if he can feature as third seamer. It depends how he does in nets," he said.

Fast bowling strength remains key to Test success

0

Cricket has once again proved that fast bowlers, on most occasions, win Test matches and series.Mitchell Johnson from Australia and Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander from South Africa were the destroyers of England and India respectively.

The nearest India came to having such an advantage was with Kapil Dev, who unfortunately did not have support from the other end. He had to carry the burden singlehandedly at most times.

Stuart Broad England's top wicket-taker

Picture: Stuart Broad has got a lot of stick from the Aussie fans for not walking and all. It has only made him mentally stronger. And it has shown in his performances during what has been a disastrous series for England. He's England's top wicket-taker, which is not something one might have expected before the series began. What a fighter.  #StarsOfTheSeries

Cricket: Rogers hits ton as Australia extend lead
beyond 400

Opener Chris Rogers scored his second century of
the series as Australia tightened their grip on the
final Ashes Test and closed in on a 5-0 series
whitewash over England in Sydney on Sunday.
The 36-year-old left-hander cut part-time
offspinner Kevin Pietersen to the boundary rope
for his third Test century -- all of them against
England.
Australia went to lunch at 248 for seven -- an
overall lead of 419 with eight sessions left to
play.
Rogers, who scored 116 in the second innings of
the fourth Test in Melbourne, was unbeaten on
114 off 163 balls at the interval with 14 fours
while Ryan Harris was on one.
Rogers shared in a fifth-wicket partnership of 109
with George Bailey, who was dismissed shortly
after first-hour drinks when he top-edged Stuart
Broad to Scott Borthwick at deep square leg for
46.
Brad Haddin became the highest-scoring
Australian wicketkeeper in a Test series with his
breezy 28 off 40 balls.
Haddin, the nemesis of the English bowlers in this
series with his lower middle-order batting,
finished the series with 493 runs at 61.62 to
better the previous best held by Adam Gilchrist
against South Africa in 2001-02.
Haddin was bowled as he swung at young leg-
spinner Borthwick and Mitchell Johnson lasted
three balls before he was bowled by Ben Stokes
for 4.

Sri Lanka eyeing unlikely win in first Test
against Pak following Mathews's ton on 4th day

Sydney, Jan 4 (ANI): Sri Lanka is eyeing an
unlikely victory in the first Test against Pakistan
in Abu Dhabi following a career-best century from
captain Angelo Mathews, which pulled the
tourists out of trouble on the fourth day at Sheikh
Zayed Stadium.
Sri Lanka is leading by 241 runs with five wickets
remaining, for which they can harbour hopes of
an unlikely win on the fifth and final day, or at
least salvage a draw.
According to News.com.au, Mathews notched up
116 not out for his second Test hundred and put
on invaluable 138-run partnership for the fifth
wicket with Dinesh Chandimal (89) and 99 for the
unfinished sixth wicket with Prasanna
Jayawardene (48 not out) to take Sri Lanka to
5-420 at stumps on Friday.
Mathews batted for 370 minutes, hitting 12
boundaries and six off spinner Saeed Ajmal, who
conceded 96 runs in 42 wicket-less overs, and
had the better of Pakistan's three-pronged pace
attack, reaching his hundred in the final session
after 239 balls, the report added

Can Suresh Raina step up in the middle order?

0

Can Suresh Raina step up in the middle order?
After a dismal ODI series in South Africa, MS
Dhoni would be hoping for a good show from his
boys when they travel to New Zealand for five
match ODI series and two Test series. It was a
new crop of players who travelled to South Africa
and they played to the potential, but just two bad
sessions in the second Test cost India the match
and the Test series. Nevertheless, India has
previously won a Test series in New Zealand and
that should give them a lot of confidence.
The surfaces in New Zealand are completely
different from South Africa. There will be quite a
lot of lateral movement off the surface along with
bounce, and it will be extremely difficult for the
batsmen to play strokes freely, which is clearly
evident from the ongoing series between New
Zealand and West Indies. West Indies batsmen
were trying to attack the Kiwi bowlers from the
word go and paid the price for it. Therefore, it is
important for India to assess the conditions well
before the first one-day match.
In ODIs, India have quality stroke makers who
can switch on the gears when needed. Shikhar
Dhawan and Rohit Sharma have given India
some prolific starts. Rohit Sharma can assess the
situation and play accordingly. He has wide range
of shots and is an excellent player off the back
foot. But Shikhar Dhawan isn't a good player of
the backfoot, and therefore, he's struggling for
runs overseas. He looks to score the runs right
from the word go, but he does not understand
that South Africa and New Zealand aren't ideal
conditions which encourage stroke play.
Therefore he has to plan his innings and bat
accordingly.
For instance, in the recently concluded South
Africa series, South Africa clearly planned their
innings when they batted. In the second ODI, they
didn't attack the bowlers unlike India. They went
to 75/0 in 15 overs and subsequently they started
building their innings. In contrast, Dhawan
attacked Dale Steyn from the first over itself and
paid the price for it.
So, it is paramount that the openers get India off
to a steady start. Rohit Sharma wouldn't find any
problems batting in New Zealand because he has
got wide range of shots. However, he needs to
find support from Dhawan at the other end. Virat
Kohli also had a good series in South Africa, and
he needs to keep that going. He learnt how to
bat overseas and is certainly capable of
reproducing the same kind of performance in New
Zealand.
However, the problem for India lies in the middle
order. Will they be able to bat well under crisis?
Certainly not with Yuvraj Singh out and Suresh
Raina 's patchy form. The middle order batsmen
have failed to handle the pressure situations right
from the tri-series in West Indies. Even in the
one-day series against Australia, the middle order
fumbled after the openers got India off to a solid
starts. This is perhaps the right time for the
middle order to get into the groove as India have
tough overseas tours this year.
However, it wouldn't be easy for the middle order
batsmen to play strokes freely. New Zealand
have asked for more grass on the pitch to assist
their fast bowlers. If there are more grass in the
pitch, there would be seam movement off the
surface and it will be extremely difficult for the
batsmen to play strokes initially. That's where
the openers have to rise to the occasion and get
India off to a steady start. Consequently, the
middle order will not feel any pressure in handling
the Kiwi bowling attack.
Rahane had a decent outing in South Africa. If he
can score runs in South Africa, why not in New
Zealand?
It will be interesting to see the middle order for
the first ODI. India have Ajinkya Rahane and
Ambati Rayudu in contention for the No.4 spot.
Considering the performance and the nature of
wickets in New Zealand, it wouldn't be a bad idea
to select Rahane for the first match. He had a
good Test series in South Africa and also had a
good outing in England in 2011. He has the
experience of playing on various types of pitches
and therefore, the first preference should be given
to Rahane.
India, on the other hand, have formidable bowling
attack. Bhuvneshwar Kumar's selection makes
perfect sense as he is a good exponent off the
new ball. The conditions prevailing in New
Zealand are ideal for someone like Bhuvneshwar
Kumar, and if he can make some early inroads
early, New Zealand's middle order will not find it
simple against India.
Also Mohammed Shami has been in good form
recently and Dhoni would be hoping that he
reproduces the same kind of performance in New
Zealand. However, it will be interesting to see
whether Ishwar Pandey will be picked as the third
seamer for the first one-day. Ishwar Pandey is
the new face in the squad and has been picked
for both Tests and ODIs and it would be
interesting to see whether Dhoni considers Ishant
Sharma as the third seamer, or gets Varun Aaron
into the mix ahead of Ishwar Pandey.
The selectors have picked a good squad for the
upcoming New Zealand series, but it all depends
on how our middle order batsmen perform in New
Zealand.

India retain in 2nd Position ICC Test Ranking

0

The 1-0 series win has helped South Africa gain two ratings points to finish on 133, while India has conceded two ratings points to end at 117. This means the gap between the two top ranked sides has now increased from 12 ratings points to 16 ratings points.

South Africa’s 10 wickets victory over India in the second Test

South Africa’s 10 wickets victory over India in the second and final Test in Durban on Monday has allowed it to extend its lead as the number-one ranked side on the Reliance ICC Test Team Rankings Table. (Also Read: Report: South Africa vs India, 2nd Test, Day 5)

The 1-0 series win has helped South Africa gain two ratings points to finish on 133, while India has conceded two ratings points to end at 117. This means the gap between the two top ranked sides has now increased from 12 ratings points to 16 ratings points.

Meanwhile, Australia has an opportunity to finish third on the Test team rankings table.

Australia had entered the Ashes series in fifth position on 101 ratings points, but after taking a 4-0 lead against England, it is guaranteed fourth position on the table. And Michael Clarke’s side will gain one more place if it remains unbeaten in the Sydney Test, which starts on Friday, 3 January.

If the Sydney Test ends in a draw, then Australia will move to 109 ratings points – one ahead of England, which will drop from 116 to 108 ratings points. However, if Australia win the Sydney Test, then it will finish on 111 ratings points while England will slip to 107 ratings points – just five ratings points ahead of Pakistan, which goes head to head with Sri Lanka in a three-Test series from Tuesday in Abu Dhabi.

The only way England can defend its third position on the table is by winning the Sydney Test. In this scenario, England will end on 109 ratings points while Australia will finish on 108 ratings points.

Pakistan, which will slip to fifth irrespective of how the Ashes conclude, can keep the pressure on Australia and England if it wins the series against Sri Lanka.

If Pakistan wins 2-0, then it will move from 102 ratings points to 105 ratings points, while it will finish on 107 if it wins all the three Tests.

On the other side of the coin, Sri Lanka has a chance to move ahead of Pakistan if it wins the series 2-0 or better. If it wins 2-0, it will jump from 88 ratings points to 95 ratings points while Pakistan will slip from 102 ratings points to 94 ratings points.

With the top four sides as of 31 December 2016 qualifying for the inaugural ICC World Test Championship scheduled for 2017, every Test counts towards the qualification. Hence in the coming weeks, all eyes will be on possible changes expected from third to sixth position on the Reliance ICC Test Team Rankings Table
